Construction Update

It is finally that time! The construction of the Mahone Bay Living Shoreline expansion is scheduled to begin!

Coastal Action is excited to announce that the Mahone Bay Living Shoreline is now expanding by 100 metres! This expansion will extend the 60-metre demonstration site further along Edgewater Street to further combat the effects of climate change, coastal erosion, and flooding. The construction is scheduled to begin this week and last around 4 - 6 weeks.

What to Expect:

In the coming weeks, the construction will focus on building the ‘shoreline’ aspect of the Living Shoreline expansion. This process will involve removing the rock sill at the edge of the expansion location (near the center of the parking lot) and the shoreline construction. Rock sills will then be reinstalled along the edge of the expansion. Similar to the existing demonstration site, gaps will be left in the rock sills to incorporate the pocket beach structure.

The Living Shoreline will have time to settle over the winter months. Planting of the tidal wetland and vegetated bank will take place in Spring 2026. We hope to host another public planting event, where all are welcome to attend.

We are very excited to see the Mahone Bay Living Shoreline expansion begin to take shape, and we cannot wait to share the progress with you!
